Soil health tradeoffs may be minimal in phosphorus‐enriched Coastal Plain soils

چکیده

Soil health practices can improve soil conditions and provide ecosystem services, but increased risk of phosphorus (P) loss be an unintended consequence. We investigated conservation tillage cover crops effects on P stratification, accumulation at depth, aggregation for sandy Coastal Plain soils from the Mid-Atlantic United States cores 10 agricultural fields with 0–15 years or cropping were analyzed Mehlich-3 dry aggregate stability. found no evidence that caused stratification in study already enriched prior to implementation. Annual particulate, dissolved runoff, leachate loads decreased when estimated using North Carolina Phosphorus Loss Assessment Tool assuming no-till (soil health) compared conventional till winter fallow (conventional). suggest are unlikely exacerbate losses high beyond their initial profile.

Potassium in Atlantic Coastal Plain Soils: I. Soil Characterization and Distribution of Potassium

Corn (Zea mays L.) grown on sandy Atlantic Coastal Plain soils is often unresponsive to applications of K fertilizer. As part of a field study on the response of irrigated, intensively managed corn to K applications, we characterized four representative Hapludults from the Delaware Coastal Plain and evaluated their K status. The soils were generally quite sandy with maximum clay contents of 11....

Tillage Intensity Effects on Chemical Indicators of Soil Quality in Two Coastal Plain Soils

Few experiments in the coastal plain region of the southeastern United States have reported the effect of long-term tillage and tillage intensity on chemical soil quality indicators. The purpose of this study was to determine the 17-year influence of four tillage systems on chemical soil quality indicators in a Benndale fine sandy loam (coarse-loamy, siliceous, semiactive, thermic, Typic Paleud...

The FHANTM 2.0 computer model can help identify areas with a high potential for P loss, but the model’s to simulate water and P movement fro...

Nitrate Contamination of Groundwater under Irrigated Coastal Plain Soils

To develop best management practices (BMP) for agricultural land to protect groundwater, data is needed on the leaching of N from irrigated coastal plain soils treated with poultry manure. This study was conducted to determine the vertical and seasonal patterns of NO3 leaching under such soils. Four commercially farmed corn (Zea mays L.) fields were studied, two receiving only fertilizer N (240...

Potassium in Atlantic Coastal Plain Soils: II. Crop Responses and Changes in Soil Potassium Under Intensive Management

Corn (Zea mays L.) grown on sandy Atlantic Coastal Plain soils is often unresponsive to applications of K fertilizer. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the response of irrigated, intensively managed corn to K applications, and to monitor changes in soil K status. Field studies were conducted for 3 yr at four sites on the Delaware Coastal Plain. Treatments consisted of 0, 94, or 2...
